- HOW LONG IS THE COURSE?
- The Motorcycle course is 20 hours in length, 17 hours are riding on a motorcycle and the other 3 hours are classroom time.
The Scooter course is 13.5 hours in length, 10.5 hours are riding on a scooter and the other 3 hours are classroom time.
- HOW MUCH DOES THE COURSE COST?
- The Motorcycle course cost $500.00 dollars from April to October. Our smaller, mid week daytime course is $500.00 The Scooter course costs $250.00 dollars from April to October. We also offer Private lessons for motorcycle or scooter courses for $600.00. These is a one day one-on-one course with an CSC Instructor. These will be available during the week depending on the availability of the instructor.
- DOES CALGARY SAFETY COUNCIL SUPPLY THE MOTORCYCLES / SCOOTERS?
- Yes, we supply the motorcycles for the Motorcycle course. Yes, we supply the Scooters for the Scooter course. Unfortunately, you are not allowed to use your own bike for our course.
- WHAT DO I NEED TO TAKE THE COURSE?
- We recommend that you get your motorcycle learners knowledge test from a Motor Registry office. The cost varies pending the Registry office you are visiting. This test is necessary for the class 6 license. In addition, you will need a D.O.T. (Department of Transportation) approved helmet, eye protection, a sturdy jacket (a Jean jacket, or leather jacket) also, boots, that cover the ankles (no high top runners) and gloves (form-fitting) will be required by each student.
- CAN I RE-TAKE THE COURSE IF REQUIRED?
- If you did not pass the course, you can take it again. The cost is $250.00 dollars and there is a 1 year time limit. We also offer 3 hour practice sessions for one-on-one work with an instructor for $200.00
- If you passed your class 6 in the previous year, you can also take the Skills Course. It is a 2 day weekend course that refreshes your skills and teaches collision avoidance, maneuvers in a controlled environment and learning your own capabilities with your bike using slow skills. The cost of the Skills Course is $200.00.
- DO I GET A CLASS 6 WITH THIS COURSE?
- As defined by Alberta Transportation in 2010, Class 6 testing is conducted by a 45 minute road test.
You must complete and pass the course test to be eligible for the FREE use of a Calgary Safety Council motorcycle to complete your class 6 road test from our location. Booking for the class 6 road test must be completed with the Beddington Registries office that schedules the licensed examiners at our lot. You must bring your CSC certificate to book and take your test.
You must also have your Class 6 Test Permit (written test) from a Registries office before the road test.
HOW DO I SCHEDULE MY CLASS 6 TEST USING YOUR MOTORCYCLES?
- Please contact the Beddington Registries (Phone 403-295-1555) to schedule your class 6 test. They will require that you pay them in person as they need to confirm that the person taking the test is the person registering for the test. You must produce your CSC certificate to register for and take the test.
- Beddington Registries is charging $120.50 for the test.
- Call Beddington Registries to schedule your test after your course. The examiners, Pro Start Driver Testing Inc. will be providing a Sunday and some Wednesdays schedule to accommodate the students as best as possible. The only stipulation they have is that they do not want to come to the site to test just one student.
DO I HAVE TO TAKE MY WRITTEN TEST AT BEDDINGTON?
- No, you may go to any registries office for this test.
- WHERE AND WHEN IS THE CLASSROOM?
- The classroom is located at Suite 108 Stockman Centre, 2116 - 27 Avenue N.E., Calgary, Alberta. The classroom time is 6:30-9:30 p.m. See the map. Parking is at the back (north side) of the building, and there is an entrance on that side of the building marked "Entrance".
- WHERE IS THE LOCATION FOR THE MOTORCYCLE RIDING INSTRUCTION?
- For the motorcycle riding session, our new location is in the Wagon Wheel Development on the east side of the QE 2 Highway north of the City limits, east of the new Cross Iron Mill Mall
See the map for this location. - HOW CAN I REGISTER FOR THE COURSE?
- There are several ways to register for the courses. The easiest way to register is online. You can register online or register by calling our office at 287-2990. Or we can fax you the form, or you can print out the form that is included in this web site, or our fax number is (403) 243-8565. In addition, you can ask our office to send out a registration form through the mail.
Please note your payment is requested immediately upon registration and payable at our office. We reserve the right to withdraw you from the course if payment is not made.

- HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE IN THE MOTORCYCLE / SCOOTER COURSE?
- Our weekend and weeklong evening motorcycle courses have a maximum of 20 students, and the mid-week daytime course is smaller with a maximum of 10 students. The 20 student courses are separated into two groups of 10 students each with two instructors for each group of 10. The Scooter course has a maximum of 6 students. Depending on the time of year it may be smaller. Our ratio for 10 students is two Instructors. The Scooter course has one instructor. The Ladies Only courses will have a maximum of 10 ladies.
- WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT WAYS TO TAKE THE MOTORCYCLE COURSE?
- There are several ways to take the course:
WEEKENDS: Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 to 5:30 p.m.
WEEK-LONG EVENINGS: are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday from 6:00 to 9:30 PM.MID-WEEK DAY TIME: Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:00 am to 5:30 p.m. each day.
PRIVATE LESSONS: Weekday Monday to Friday, depending upon availability of instructor
Practice Sessions (3 hours) are available to our registered students.
It is best to look at our Motorcycle Registration for the dates and the course numbers.
Classroom time is also required to take this course, classroom sessions are held on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday nights. Classroom attendance is required before the course.
- WHAT IS THE REFUND POLICY?
- Our Cancellation Policy is that 14 days notice is required to cancel a course (which includes classroom and riding sessions) and to receive a full refund. With less than 14 days notice, but more than 3 working days notice, students will be assessed a $50.00 fee. With less than 3 working days notice, students will be assessed a $100.00 fee. Students who fail to attend the course will forfeit the entire fee. The Calgary Safety Council retains the right to cancel or reschedule courses as required.
- ARE ROAD RIDES OFFERED?
- Yes, we do provide road rides. Upon completion of for our course, a participant will be allowed to go, only if they have proven they have the skills necessary to ride on the streets and have passed the Calgary Safety Council course test. The instructors will make these decisions.
- WHAT WILL I LEARN IN THE COURSE?
- If you are a novice rider you will gain knowledge to help avoid accidents during the first six months of riding.

Note that while the course is designed for the majority of the students all students learn at different paces and while most take and pass the course, some students may benefit from repeating the course or taking additional practice sessions to increase their abiltiy.
- WHAT TYPE OF MOTORCYCLES ARE USED FOR THE COURSE?
- We have 100 cc to 250 cc Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, and Suzuki motorcycles.
- IF I DO NOT HAVE A HELMET, WHERE DO I GET ONE?
- We have helmets for rent at $ 10.00 dollars a course. If you do need a helmet let our office know and we can arrange to have a rental for you when the course starts.
- WILL THE COURSE CONTINUE IF THERE IS INCLEMENT WEATHER?
- The courses are scheduled to go unless we have adverse weather conditions. Please come prepared with rain gear and/or warm clothing pending the weather.
- If you were unable to complete your course due to weather conditions, we will rebook you into another course.
- DO YOU OFFER AN ADVANCED COURSE?
- Yes, we offer one advance course. It requires that you have your class 6 license and have had a few years experience on a motorcycle. The cost is $200.00 dollars for the advanced course. The course is two days and offers a bike inspection, advance emergency maneuvers, hill starts, braking and steering techniques. The students also do a road ride outside of the City limits
- I AM INTERESTED IN BECOMING A MOTORCYCLE INSTRUCTOR. WHAT DO I NEED?
- Please be advised that motorcycle instructors are required to meet certain criteria required by the Alberta Department of Justice, Motor Vehicle Division, and the Canada Safety Council.
- Nineteen years of age;
- Minimum of three years riding experience;
- Licensed Motorcyclist for a minimum of three years;
- No Motor Vehicle license suspension within the last two years;
- Possess a valid Alberta Driver’s License (Class 6) with less than six demerits;
- Have, or be prepared to obtain a current First Aid certificate, supplied by CSC;
- Successfully completed the Motorcycle Instructor Development Course (IDC);
- Knowledge of compliance with the code of ethics;
- Criminal background check;
- Successful completion of the Alberta Infrastructure written exam.
The criteria are:
- Prior students of the Gearing up Motorcycle course are encouraged to consider becoming an instructor.
Cost for the IDC (Instructor Development Course) is $150.00 payable to Calgary Safety Council
Note: Some of these costs will be recovered after teaching your first course after the buddy course.
IDC courses are held once a year usually in March.
